Kangaroos
What can we say, roos are Kangaroo Island. They hold a special place in our hearts as we have raised many orphaned roos over the years. Even now there are three pretending to be asleep by our back door. They know our every move.
Kangaroo Island roos are a subspecies of Western Grey kangaroos. Compared to their mainland cousins, they are slightly smaller, have a softer, darker coat, more relaxed and overall much better looking.
There are large numbers of roos on the Sanctuary, most are wild. However, as you finally meet their approval and they “adopt you”. It is a daily event to see a mob or two grazing the pasture in the morning or towards evening. The rest of the day they are sleeping in the bush.
Koalas
Kangaroo Island Koalas are disease free and many have been sent from the Sanctuary to the mainland to establish new colonies. You will find them in most areas of the Island, including settled areas. Not very active, sleeping 18 hours a day, they can be hard to see being high in the branches of large trees along the rivers and creeks.
Wallabies
Most people don’t even know Wallabies exist, thinking they are a “baby” Kangaroo. Tammar Wallabies are only about 45cm high, have thick fur that’s a dark grey-brown colour. Mainly nocturnal, they are shy and graze in clearings that are close to cover. At night they can be found in large numbers grazing on our pastures.
Possums
There are 4 species of possum to be found at the Sanctuary. Most common is the Brushtail and also the smaller Ringtail possum We have raised many of them and released on the farm. There are also 2 types of Pygmy Possum. Often mistaken as a mouse they are endangered and rarely seen but inhabit the “Yacca Tree” areas at the Sanctuary
